In off-road cycling, tires play an important role in performance. Having suitable tires is the difference between turning and sliding out of a bend. The key is to find the perfect combination of traction, weight, and durability. Let's get started!
Choose mountain bike tires
Are you riding on mud, sand, mud, or snow? Great, then this category is suitable for you. The first question you need to ask yourself when choosing tires is where will I ride? Deep dust, mud, large amounts of rocks, slippery tree roots, hard lumps, gravel/mud roads? The type and condition of soil play a crucial role in determining the type of tire you want to use. Next, you need to consider your goals while cycling. If you are a casual cyclist who wants to have fun and ensure safety, your tire selection may be different from that of an XC racer riding the same route. When making tire selection decisions, you need to consider the following factors:
Wheel size
Firstly, when you are looking for new tires, please know your wheel size: 26, 27.5, or 29!
Tire width
●1.6-3 inches: From narrow XC tires to larger and wider tires, there are now many options available
●Ensure that the tires you see fit your wheel rim and have clearance with your bicycle.
●Generally speaking, wider tires should be able to provide more traction and control.
●Narrower tires may roll faster on flat roads.
●For XC racing cars, most riders use 1.6-2.2 inch tires, while off-road, endurance, and downhill riders choose 2.3 inch and larger tires!
●Comfort is also a factor. Wide tires allow for lower tire pressure, resulting in smoother and more comfortable driving.
tire tread
●For mountain bikes, the tire tread varies greatly.
●XC racing: Generally speaking, shorter (low profile) and closely spaced tread patterns should be used. This pattern can reduce rolling resistance and is very suitable for hard and fast tracks.
●Off road races, endurance races, downhill races: Generally speaking, you will look for larger knobs to ride your bike into off-road races, in order to gain greater traction on loose soil and mud.
●The tread pattern can affect the performance of the tire under different conditions and on different road surfaces. For example, the high protrusion in the center of the tire tread may be perfect for fresh, fertile roads or muddy terrain, but it can become a nightmare when riding on rocky roads.
●The sidewall of a tire can also affect its performance. Tires with thinner sidewalls are lighter in weight, but they sacrifice durability, explosion resistance, and cornering stability.
Tire type
●Tubeless: Nowadays, most mountain bike tires are ready to use tubeless, which means that when used with tubeless rims and sealants, the tires will remain inflated. Tubeless tires are an ideal choice for mountain bikes because you can lower tire pressure for better traction without the risk of tire blowouts. Tubeless sealant can also fill small holes in traditional tires and inner tubes that may cause tire blowouts.
●Folding beads and wire beads: This refers to the material of the tire edge (or bead). Folding tires use Kevlar beads, which are lighter in weight and very durable. Steel wire tires cannot be folded because the tire beads are made of metal. These tires are heavier, but the tire beads may also be more durable. Many "downhill tires" do not offer folding versions. One of the biggest differences between these two types of tires is their price - folding tires are more expensive.
chemical compound
●The compound range of mountain bike tires ranges from hard to super soft.
●Harder compounds roll faster and more durable, but sacrifice traction control.
●Softer compounds can provide better grip, but may wear out faster.
●The selection of composite materials will be based on path conditions, performance requirements, and the most economical way for the rider.
Please remember that the tread and composite materials of different brands vary greatly. Don't be afraid to ask questions at the local bike shop to ensure that the tires you purchase meet your needs. All tire decisions start with a simple question: Where do I ride? What is my goal? How much am I willing to spend (and how often am I willing to replace the tire)?
