What is a wheel rim?

Jul 18, 2025 Leave a message

The wheel rim is a circular component on the wheel that supports the tire and is connected to the wheel hub through a series of spokes. Most modern wheels are made of alloy or carbon fiber. Alloy wheels are usually more flexible and have lower manufacturing costs, while carbon fiber wheels are handmade, lighter than alloy wheels, and typically more durable.

In light bicycles, we use high-quality carbon fiber to manufacture high-performance wheels and other bicycle parts.

1. Central channel/wheel base/sinking channel
The central groove (or wheel seat) is the area where the tire is mounted onto the wheel rim. There are spoke mounting holes drilled on the wheel seat so that the spokes can pass through and connect to the wheel hub. The design of the wheel seat for open rims and tube tire rims is different.

2. Wheel rim hook
The wheel hook is an inward convex ridge formed around the outer circumference of the wheel, which can provide higher stability and tire retention, especially under high tire pressure. Hooked wheels help prevent traditional open tires from bursting under high pressure. Wheels with hooks are called hooked wheels, while wheels without hooks are called unhooked wheels.

3. Pearl lock
The tire bead lock is a small ridge set on both sides of the central groove. These buckles make tire installation easier and reduce the risk of tire blowouts, especially in low tire pressures. The tire bead lock enables all of our open tire rims to support vacuum tires.

4. Wheel rim offset
Wheels with offset spoke mounting holes on the rim base are called asymmetric wheels. We use asymmetric contours on some mountain bike wheels to make the spoke tension on both sides of the wheel more evenly distributed. A wheel with uniform tension can maintain stability for a longer period of time and perform better over time. How to choose between symmetrical and asymmetrical wheels>>

5. Diagonal hole
The spoke cap holes pass through the wheel rim at a suitable angle, perfectly matching the regular size of the wheel hub. This allows the spoke cap to generate tension in a straight line with the spokes, rather than tilting. Keeping the spoke caps in line with the spokes can reduce spoke breakage and decrease the need for wheel maintenance.
