The structure of the flywheel

Jul 09, 2024 Leave a message

The flywheel is a transmission component installed on the rear wheel of a bicycle, which is a one-way running mechanism composed of an inner ratchet type outer shell and two claws (weighing thousands of pounds). The rotation of the wheel is achieved by driving the flywheel through a sprocket and chain drive. The flywheels used in bicycles can generally be divided into two categories, namely ordinary flywheels and multi-stage flywheels, which can be further divided into internal and external variable speeds.

Ordinary flywheels are generally used for ordinary bicycles, small wheelers, strollers, heavy-duty vehicles, tricycles, and motorized bicycles.
The internal variable speed flywheel is applied to general variable speed bicycles.
The external variable speed flywheel is applied to sports cars, racing cars, tourist cars, and general multi speed vehicles.

The structure of a regular flywheel component consists of 8 parts. The inner hole of the jacket generally has 21 evenly distributed inner claws, and the core is equipped with two claws (weighing thousands of pounds). This set of components is a ratchet and pawl structure, which functions similarly to a one-way overrunning clutch.
In addition, the inner thread of the core is installed on the rear axle component of the bicycle, and the sprocket teeth of the outer sleeve engage with the bicycle chain externally, forming a pair of chain transmission pairs. When the pedal components of the bicycle rotate under force, the motion is transmitted to the flywheel through the sprocket and chain, and then the claws of the flywheel drive the rear wheels to achieve bicycle movement. The transmission ratio between the sprocket and flywheel allows the rear wheels to achieve a certain rotational speed. When the outer sleeve rotates clockwise, the inner ratchet end face in the inner hole of the outer sleeve contacts the end face of the jack, allowing the core assembled with the jack to rotate clockwise as well. When pushing or sliding a bicycle, the longitudinal back of the jack is compressed by the inclined surface of the inner ratchet of the jacket, and the pressure is transmitted to the jack spring, causing it to move down along the small groove on the jack, and the pawl retracts into the large groove of the core, so that the jacket does not rotate with the core. At this time, the jacket and core move relative to each other, giving people the opportunity to hold the bicycle and the possibility of sliding and resting.

The multi-stage flywheel is a structure of an external variable speed flywheel. Its function and principle are basically similar to ordinary flywheels, except for the addition of multi speed tooth sprockets with different numbers of teeth in the appearance. Multiple different transmission ratios can be obtained by meshing between sprockets with different numbers of teeth and large sprockets. If two large sprocket plates are applied and then meshed with a multi-stage flywheel, through the conversion of the derailleur, the bicycle can change its speed with a transmission ratio of twice the number of sprockets, in order to achieve different purposes such as climbing and adjusting physical strength.

Due to the special function of the flywheel, the materials used in the components of the flywheel should generally maintain a certain degree of toughness and have sufficient wear resistance, that is, the surface should have sufficient hardness. Therefore, the materials are made of ordinary carbon steel carburized or carbon nitrogen co carburized.

The process of producing various components of flywheel is developing towards mechanization and automation. After the raw materials (round steel, flat steel) enter the factory, they undergo processes such as cutting, hot heading, or cold stamping, metal cutting, heat treatment, surface treatment, etc., and finally assembled into a flywheel. The equipment and fixtures used in the production process for each component can be standardized, generalized, and serialized, forming a large-scale assembly line production.
